The Promise of Rest

“Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. For indeed, the gospel was preached to us and to them, but the word they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. For we who have believed do enter that rest as He has said:

Hebrews 4:7 “Again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said: “Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”

While at the high school, I worked at a homecoming basketball game, and sitting next to a lovely couple, I watched how the players were playing aggressively. A player threw the ball to a teammate but missed it, and it came toward a woman sitting next to me. However, her husband stretched out his hand, preventing the ball from hitting her in the face. She didn’t faze, flinch, or even act concerned one bit. I thought about her confidence in her husband.

I left early because we had a Cross-Country tournament early the following day, and I needed to arrive early to meet my team for warm-up. I didn’t get to see if our team won. Still, I got the message clearly that no matter what comes toward us, we can rest in the knowledge that GOD is with us. His outstretched hand will protect us from whatever the enemy throws at us. I am comforted knowing that His arm is not too small to reach us, nor is He indifferent to anyone who calls on Him for help. God’s love and faithfulness are steadfast; we can rest in this knowledge, mixed with faith in JESUS, amen.
