Tearing Down Altars:

Saul’s Fear of Man vs. the Fear of the LORD

Day’s Journey Devotional Series
Soli Deo Gloria

The fear of man lays a snare,
but whoever trusts in the LORD is safe.”
Proverbs 29:25

Introduction

Not all altars are built with gold.
Some are built with approval, acceptance, and the need to be understood.

King Saul did not lose the kingdom because he lacked ability—he lost it because he feared people more than God. This altar is subtle and dangerous because it disguises itself as humility while quietly enslaving the heart.

Morning Devotional

When Obedience Costs Reputation

Scripture Anchors:

  • 1 Samuel 15:22–24
  • Proverbs 29:25

Saul obeyed God partially—but delayed obedience is still disobedience. When confronted, Saul admitted the truth:

“I feared the people and obeyed their voice.”

The fear of man became Saul’s altar. It dictated his decisions, diluted his obedience, and silenced repentance. David feared God and repented quickly; Saul feared people and defended himself.

The fear of man promises safety but delivers bondage.

Sacred Pause

  • Whose approval am I protecting?
  • Where has fear of rejection shaped my obedience?

Noon Reflection

Renouncing the Spirit of People-Pleasing

Scripture Anchor:

“Am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God?”
Galatians 1:10

The Spirit of God does not compete with public opinion. When we place approval above obedience, we hand authority to voices God never anointed.

Renunciation is how we return authority to Christ.

Daily Renunciation Prayer

In the Name of Jesus Christ,
I renounce the fear of man and every spirit of people-pleasing.
I release the need for approval, validation, and acceptance above obedience to God.
I declare that the LORD alone defines my identity and secures my future.
I choose the fear of the LORD, which brings wisdom and freedom.
Amen.

Evening Devotional

Resting in God’s Approval

Scripture Anchors:

  • Psalm 27:1
  • Romans 8:1

God does not withdraw His Love when He corrects us. Conviction is evidence of belonging. Tonight, we rest in the truth that we are approved—not by performance, but by grace.

 Sacred Pause

  • What burden did I carry today that God never asked me to bear?
  • Where can I rest more deeply in His acceptance?

Evening Prayer of Repentance & Rest

Father God,
Forgive me for seeking approval where I should have sought obedience. Heal the places in me shaped by fear of rejection. As I rest tonight, anchor my heart in Your Love and truth. Teach me to walk boldly in reverence for You alone.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Closing Doxology
