A quiet prayer before we begin
Lord Jesus, thank You for the gentle lessons You teach through stories. Help us see how complaining can weigh the heart down, and how gratitude opens the way for life, refreshment, and joy. In Jesus’ Name, amen.

Mahle the Spotted Lamb had been complaining so much that he did not notice the ground beneath his feet was beginning to sink.
He complained about the heat.
He complained about the sand.
He complained about the long walk.
He even forgot to thank God that the Lion had found him and was leading him safely through the desert.
The Lion looked at Mahle with loving eyes and said,
“Mahle, stop complaining and thank God for finding you.”

But Mahle kept grumbling.
Step by step, the ground beneath him sank lower and lower until suddenly—
plop!
Mahle fell into a dark hole.

The pit was deep and cold. Mahle’s heart pounded. He looked up and saw only a small circle of light above him. At last, he realized the Lion had been right.
With tears in his eyes, Mahle bowed his head and said,
“Lord, I am sorry. Thank You for finding me. Thank You for loving me. Thank You for the Lion who came to help me.”

As soon as Mahle began to repent and thank God, something wonderful happened.
Water began to rise in the hole.
Cool, clean water filled the dark pit little by little until it lifted Mahle upward. Higher and higher he rose, until at last the water pushed him right out of the pit.
Mahle gasped with joy as he stood safely beside the Lion again.
The water did not stop there.
It flowed out into the desert, bringing refreshment not only to Mahle and the Lion, but to all the creatures nearby. Birds came to drink. Little animals gathered close. Even the tired desert flowers seemed to lift their faces with joy.
Mahle learned something he would never forget:
Complaining had pulled him down,
but repentance and gratitude opened the way for living water.
Memory Verse
“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.”
—Psalm 107:1
Reflection Question
What are some things you can thank God for today instead of complaining?
A little prayer
Dear Jesus,
Forgive me for the times I complain and forget to thank You. Help me remember Your goodness, even when things feel hard. Fill my heart with gratitude, and let Your living water refresh me and others, too. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
Thankful hearts make room for living water.
