Hippii Remembers the Good

Children’s Day’s Journey Reflection

Memory Verse:
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”
— Proverbs 3:5

One quiet afternoon, Hippii the Hippo sat by the lake, watching the little ripples move across the water.

The sky was soft.
The flowers were bright.
The lily pads floated gently near the shore.

But Hippii did not feel peaceful inside.

He dipped one big toe into the water and sighed.

Joppa the Ostrich came walking along the shore with Millo, the little bird, sitting on her shoulder.

“Hippii,” Joppa said gently, “your face looks cloudy Today.”

Millo tilted his tiny head. “Did something stir up your heart?”

Hippii nodded.

“I heard some scary news,” he said. “Then I started thinking about all the things that could go wrong. My heart got loud inside. I tried to remember good things, but all the scary thoughts came up first.”

Joppa sat beside him.

“That can happen,” she said. “Sometimes fear tries to splash mud all over the good memories.”

Hippii looked at the lake. “I don’t want fear to be in charge again.”

Millo fluttered down to a lily pad nearby. “Then maybe we can help you bring up the good memories.”

Hippii blinked. “How?”

Joppa smiled softly. “One memory at a time.”

Hippii took a deep breath.

Joppa asked, “Can you remember one time when the Shepherd helped you?”

Hippii closed his eyes.

At first, he remembered the scary forest.
Then he remembered feeling alone.
Then he remembered being afraid.

His ears drooped. “The scary memories are louder.”

Millo chirped gently, “That does not mean the good memories are gone. It just means we need to look for them carefully.”

Joppa nodded. “Ask the LORD to help you remember what is true.”

So Hippii whispered, “Lord, please help me remember the good.”

The lake grew quiet.

Then Hippii remembered something.

“I remember when the Lion came near me by the lake,” Hippii said. “He did not yell at me. He stayed close.”

“That is a good memory,” said Joppa.

Millo flapped his wings happily. “Bring up another one!”

Hippii thought again.

“I remember when Joppa used her brave voice to remind me that I can close the door to fear.”

Joppa smiled. “That is another good memory.”

“And I remember,” Hippii said slowly, “when Millo told me that not every thought tells the truth.”

Millo puffed up his little chest. “That was an important one.”

Hippii’s face began to soften.

Then he remembered more.

He remembered friends sitting beside him.
He remembered the clean lake after the swamp of sorrow.
He remembered the Lion’s kind eyes.
He remembered that he was not alone.

A little smile came across Hippii’s face.

“The good memories were still there,” he said. “Fear just tried to cover them.”

Joppa gently touched her wing near his shoulder.

“Yes,” she said. “And when fear gets stirred up, you can talk to the LORD. You can ask Him to help you remember His goodness.”

Millo nodded. “The news may be loud, but Jesus is louder in our hearts when we listen to Him.”

Hippii looked across the lake. The water sparkled in the sunlight.

“So when scary thoughts come,” Hippii said, “I can pause. I can pray. I can remember what the LORD has already done.”

“That is wisdom,” said Joppa.

“And,” Millo added, “you do not have to pull up good memories all by yourself. Friends can help you remember, too.”

Hippii smiled bigger.

“I remember now,” he said. “The LORD has helped me before. He is helping me Today. And He will help me tomorrow.”

Joppa, Millo, and Hippii sat together near the lake.

They did not pretend the world was never scary.
They did not pretend hard things never happened.
But they remembered that fear was not their shepherd.

Jesus was.

And the Good Shepherd knew how to lead their hearts back to peace.

Little Lesson

Sometimes scary thoughts feel louder than good memories.

When that happens, we can pause and pray:

“Lord, help me remember what is true.”

Good memories can remind us that God has helped us before, and He is still with us Today.
