Orrin the Young Ox and the Heavy Yoke
With Joppa, Millo, and Friends
Prayer
Dear Jesus, thank You for being gentle with us when we feel tired, heavy, or worn out. Help us learn that You made us for good things, but not to carry every burden alone. Amen.

One warm afternoon, Joppa the Ostrich and Millo the little bird were walking along the meadow path with Mahle the Spotted Lamb, Rafi-Owl, Hippi the Hippo, and Lion.
As they came near a small hill, they heard the sound of something dragging.
Scrape. Thump. Scrape. Thump.
Joppa stopped and lifted her head.
“Do you hear that?”
Millo chirped softly, “It sounds like someone carrying something very heavy.”
When they rounded the bend, they saw a young ox named Orrin.
Orrin had a yoke across his shoulders, and on both sides of it were bundles stacked high with wood, tools, sacks, and ropes. He was trying very hard to keep moving, but his legs trembled, and his face looked tired.
Mahle’s ears drooped. “Oh no. He looks so heavy.”
Joppa walked gently toward him. “Hello, Orrin. Are you all right?”
Orrin tried to smile, but it came out weak. “I’m okay. I just need to keep going.”
Millo tilted his little head. “That load looks very big.”

Orrin nodded. “It is. But I’m an ox. Oxen are supposed to work. I have a job to do.”
Rafi-Owl flew down to a fence post nearby. “That is true,” he said kindly. “A yoke can be used for good work and good purpose.”
Lion stepped closer, his voice calm and warm. “But a good purpose is not the same as never resting.”
Orrin blinked. “What do you mean?”
Lion said, “The LORD cares about His creatures. He made oxen strong, but He never meant for them to be crushed.”
Hippi the Hippo nodded from the shade. “Even strong ones need rest.”
Mahle added softly, “Even when your job is important.”
Orrin looked down at the path. “I thought if I kept carrying more and more, then I would be doing the right thing.”
Joppa smiled gently. “Doing good work is a blessing. But carrying too much can make your heart tired and your body hurt.”
Rafi-Owl opened his Bible and read:
“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28
Then he turned a few pages and said, “And the LORD even commanded times of rest, showing that people and working animals alike were not made to go without stopping.”
Rafi-Owl looked at Orrin, then at the meadow, the trees, the birds, and the flowers along the path.
“The LORD’s care is not small,” Rafi said. “He cares for all He has made. He cares for children, families, workers, widows, orphans, lambs, birds, oxen, and every living thing.”
Joppa nodded. “That means kindness is part of God’s message to all creation.”
Lion stepped closer and said, “The Father made Orrin strong, but He also made him worthy of care. Strength was never meant to become suffering without rest.”
Millo chirped softly, “So when we care for the weary, when we are gentle with animals, and when we let the tired rest, we are showing the world what God’s love looks like.”
And Orrin understood something new:
The LORD not only sees the work he carried out.
The LORD saw him.
Orrin listened carefully.
“So my yoke is not bad?” he asked.
“No,” said Lion. “Not every yoke is bad. Some yokes help us do good work. But when the load becomes too heavy, we must remember that God is wise and kind. He knows that even an ox needs to rest.”

Joppa stepped beside Orrin. “Would you let us help you set some of this down?”
At first, Orrin hesitated. He had carried heavy things for so long that stopping felt strange.
But then he nodded.
So Joppa and Mahle helped loosen the ropes.
Hippi nudged one of the sacks to the grass.
Rafi-Owl guided from above.
And Millo sat on Orrin’s yoke, singing a tiny cheerful song.
When the bundles were lifted away, Orrin gave a deep breath.
Then another, and another.
“It feels,” he said slowly, “as I can breathe again.”
Lion looked at him with kindness. “That is what rest can feel like.”

Orrin sat down beneath a tree while the others rested with him.
The breeze was soft. The sun was warm.
And for the first time in a long while, Orrin did not feel like he had to prove he was good by carrying everything.
After a while, Lion said, “Orrin, the LORD gave you strength for a purpose. But He also gave you limits for your good.”
Orrin thought about that.
“So I can work hard,” he said, “and still rest when I need to?”
“Yes,” said Joppa.
“You can do good,” said Mahle.
“And still be gentle with yourself,” said Hippi.
“You do not have to carry every load all at once,” said Rafi-Owl.
Millo chirped, “And you never carry alone when the Lord is near!”
Orrin smiled, this time for real.
That day, the young ox learned something very important:
A yoke can be for a good purpose, but even an ox deserves rest.
And Joppa and her friends remembered too:
God does not only care about the work we do. He cares about the hearts and shoulders that carry it.
Heart Lesson
Sometimes we think being strong means never stopping.
But God teaches us something better.
He gives us good things to do.
He helps us serve, work, and grow.
But he also teaches us to rest.
Jesus is gentle.
He does not want us crushed by heavy burdens.
He wants us to come to Him when we feel weary.
Short Message
The LORD calls us to proclaim His goodness to all creation—not only with our words, but with kindness, mercy, justice, and rest.

Dear Jesus,
Please forgive me for the times I try to carry too much on my own. Forgive me when I think I must do everything without resting.
Help me remember that You care for me. Teach me to work with a willing heart, but also to stop and rest when I need to. Thank you for being gentle with me.
Thank You for Orrin and for the lesson You taught him. Thank You for giving us good things to do, and for caring when we feel tired.
Help every child remember that they do not have to carry every burden alone. Teach us to come to You when we feel weary. Let us rest in Your Love and trust that You are taking care of us. In Jesus’ name,
Amen. God gives strength for the journey
and rest for the weary.
