Keeping the Incense Burning
When I was a child, I would hear my grandmother plead with God in tears for her family.
At the time, my heart was hard. I did not understand what she was doing. I did not believe God heard her, and I did not know if He even cared. To me, they were just tears, just prayers, just another sound in the house.
But now I know better.
She was standing in the gap.
She was lifting up a family that did not even realize how much it needed to be held. We were not perfect. We were far from perfect. We were dysfunctional in many ways, yet somehow still functional. Looking back, I believe it was because her prayers were holding us together.
Her prayers were like incense rising before God.
After she passed away, I saw things begin to fall apart in ways I could not explain. It was as though the seams began to loosen. The family that had once been held together, even in brokenness, began to unravel.
I remember seeing some of them a couple of years later, and they looked as though they were wasting away. We were all falling apart at the seams. I did not fully understand it then, but I understand more now.
There had been a praying woman in the family.
There had been someone keeping the incense burning.
There had been someone crying out, “Lord, save my family.”
I will never forget the day I attended a prayer meeting while I was still doubtful about prayer. Something broke open in me. I fell to my knees and cried out to God to save my family, just as my grandmother had done when I was a child.
And I have kept the incense burning ever since.
Now, as I get older, I find myself reflecting on my own departure. I wonder who will take the mantle from me. Who will keep our family lifted in prayer? Who will have that relationship with God, maybe even deeper than mine? Who will keep the wick burning in intercession?
Lately, the Lord has been showing me who.
And my heart rejoices.
Because I know that when my time comes, I will go in peace knowing the generations after me will be held in the same Love God has given me through Jesus Christ, my King and Savior.
Like Elijah, the Lord sent Elisha.
And now I see that the mantle does not end with me.
As my grandmother stood in the gap after her mother departed, and as I stood in the gap after my grandmother, I believe my daughter will stand in the gap for the next generation—filled with truth, Love, and grace.
This is not about perfection.
It never was.
It is about faithfulness.
It is about one generation crying out for the next. It is about the prayers that rise when no one else sees. It is about the tears God does not waste. It is about the family being held by God’s mercy, even when they do not yet know who is praying for them.
The wick is still burning.
The incense is still rising.
And the God who heard my grandmother hears me.
The God who met me on my knees will meet the next generation, too.
Sacred Pause
Lord, thank You for the prayers that held me when I did not know they were holding me.
Thank You for the grandmothers who cried out, and continue to do so, even now.
Thank You for the tears You did not waste; You saw, You heard, and You answered.
Thank You for the mantle of prayer; assign someone to keep it burning and carry it until You return.
Thank You that the incense is still rising. Let it be like a sweet aroma to You.
Prayer of Surrender and Repentance
Father, in the name of Jesus, I thank You for every intercessor who stood in the gap for me before I knew how to pray.
Thank You for my grandmother’s tears. Thank You for her faithfulness. Thank You for the prayers that covered our family when we were too broken, too blind, or too hard-hearted to understand.
Lord, I repent for the times I doubted that You heard her. I repent for the times I treated prayer as small, powerless, or unseen. Forgive me for the times I allowed discouragement to silence my own intercession.
Forgive me for the times I tried to carry my family in fear instead of lifting them to You in faith.
Lord, teach me to keep the incense burning without striving, without panic, and without control. Let my prayers rise before You with Love, truth, humility, and trust.
Bless the daughter who will carry the mantle after me. Fill her with Your Spirit. Root her in truth. Cover her in grace. Teach her to pray with compassion, wisdom, courage, and Love.
Let Your mercy hold the next generation.
Let the wick keep burning, the incense keep rising.
Let the prayers continue from generation to generation.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
