When the Game Stops, God Still Speaks
Scripture for the Journey
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
— Joshua 1:8 NKJV
Beginning Prayer
LORD of all creation, Almighty God,
Thank You for this day and for every young life You have entrusted to Your care. Thank You for Your Word, which speaks truth when our hearts feel weak, confused, disappointed, or afraid. Help us, by the power of Your Holy Spirit, to be doers of Your Word and not hearers only. Let Your truth live in our hearts and rest upon our lips. Teach us to speak life, hope, comfort, and courage in the name of Jesus.
Amen.

Reflection
Some disappointments cut deeper than others.
For a young athlete, an injury can feel like more than pain in the body. It can feel like a loss of purpose, identity, and hope. When the season stops, when the team keeps moving without you, and when your body cannot do what it used to do, discouragement can settle in quietly like a shadow.
That is where this story begins.
At Ray of Hope High School, the gym had already emptied after practice. The echoes of bouncing basketballs and squeaking shoes had faded, but one student remained behind.
His name was Jalen.
He sat alone on the lower bleachers with his crutches leaning against the bench beside him. His knee was wrapped, his shoulders were slumped, and his eyes stayed fixed on the polished gym floor. Only a week earlier, he had been one of the quickest players on the court. Now the doctor had told him he would be out for the season.
To everyone else, it was just an injury.
But to Jalen, it felt like everything had fallen apart.
He had worked hard. He had trained. He had dreamed about scholarships, championships, and proving himself. Now all he could think was, What is the point?
As he sat there, he heard footsteps.

Matthias came in first, his Bible tucked under his arm, and his green hoodie sleeves pushed up. Kazim followed, carrying his basketball at his hip. Brent came next, tall and broad-shouldered, with a quiet strength in his expression. Kayden walked in gently, her long blonde hair catching the light from the high gym windows, and Azzah came with her sketchbook held close against her chest.
They had noticed Jalen sitting alone.
Matthias sat down beside him without crowding him. Kazim and Brent leaned against the bleachers nearby. Kayden sat on Jalen’s other side, and Azzah sat one row down, watching with soft, attentive eyes.

For a moment, nobody said anything.
Sometimes ministry begins with presence before words.
Finally, Jalen shook his head and said, “I’m done.”
Brent looked over at him. “Done with rehab?”
Jalen gave a bitter laugh. “Done with all of it. The season. The work. The waiting. I prayed, and I still got hurt. I did everything right, and now I’m sitting here watching everybody else keep going.”

His voice tightened.
“If I can’t play, then what am I even good for?”
The question hung heavy in the quiet gym.

Matthias opened his Bible slowly and said, “Can I read something?”
Jalen shrugged, not sure he wanted to hear it, but he didn’t say no.
Matthias turned to Joshua 1:8 and read it aloud. His voice was steady, reverent, and kind.
When he finished, Jalen looked down. “That sounds good, but I don’t feel prosperous, and I definitely don’t feel successful.”

Kazim nodded. “A lot of people think success means winning, getting noticed, or never getting hurt. But God’s kind of success is deeper than that.”
Brent added, “Sometimes the hardest thing for an athlete is realizing we are more than what our bodies can do.”
Jalen swallowed hard.
Kayden spoke softly. “You’re still valuable even when you can’t perform.”
Those words made his eyes fill.
The others could see what was really hurting him. It was not only his knee. It was the fear that his worth had been tied to his performance.
Matthias looked at him and said, “Joshua had a huge assignment from God. He was stepping into something hard, uncertain, and overwhelming. God did not tell him, ‘You’ll be fine as long as nothing painful happens.’ He told him to stay in the Word. Meditate on it day and night. Obey it. Keep it in your mouth. In other words, don’t let fear preach louder than truth.”
Jalen wiped at his eyes quickly, embarrassed.
Kazim crouched down so he could look at him at eye level. “Right now discouragement is talking to you. It’s telling you that because you’re injured, you’re useless. But that is not the voice of God.”
Brent folded his arms and said, “The enemy loves to hit people in the place where they find their identity. If he can’t destroy your gift, he’ll try to convince you that your life is over when your gift is interrupted.”

Azzah opened her sketchbook and began to draw while they talked.
Matthias continued, “God’s Word says to meditate on truth day and night. That means when your thoughts start spiraling, you answer them with what God says. Not just once—but over and over again.”
Jalen looked up at him. “So what am I supposed to say?”
Matthias smiled gently. “Say what God says.”
Then he began slowly:

“My injury is real, but it is not my identity.“
Kazim nodded. “Say, God is still with me, even in this season.“
Kayden added, “Say, my worth is not based on what I can do, but on who I am in Christ.“
Brent said, “Say, this setback does not cancel God’s purpose for my life.“
Azzah turned her sketchbook around.
She had drawn Jalen sitting on the bleachers with his crutches beside him. Above him, in gentle lettering, she had written:
Let there be life on our lips.
Below that she had written:
When the game stops, God still speaks.
Jalen stared at the page. His mouth trembled.
“I’ve been saying the opposite to myself all week.”
Matthias nodded. “That’s why we’re here.”
Then he turned one more page in his Bible.
“Jalen, being a doer of the Word is not just about reading the Bible when life is going well. It’s about holding onto truth when everything in you wants to give up.”
He paused before continuing.
“Sometimes obedience looks like getting up for rehab when you feel defeated. Sometimes it looks like refusing to call yourself worthless. Sometimes it looks like speaking life when you want to agree with despair.”
The gym was quiet again, but this time it felt holy.
Kayden reached over and gently touched Jalen’s arm. “You don’t have to walk this out alone.”
Kazim rested his basketball on the floor and said, “We can come sit with you after school. We can pray with you before therapy. We can remind you who you are when you forget.”
Brent gave a small smile. “And when you’re ready, we’ll be the first ones cheering for every small step forward.”
Jalen let out a shaky breath.
“For the first time since I got hurt,” he said, “I don’t feel completely alone.”
Matthias closed his Bible and said, “That’s how God ministers sometimes—through His Word and through His people.”

Then the whole group gathered around Jalen right there on the bleachers.
Matthias prayed first.
“Lord, let there be life on Jalen’s lips. Where discouragement has spoken death, speak truth. Where fear has spoken failure, speak identity. Where pain has spoken hopelessness, speak healing.”
Kazim prayed for courage.
Kayden prayed for peace.
Brent prayed for strength and endurance.
Azzah prayed that Jalen would see himself through the eyes of God’s Love and not through the lens of loss.
And Jalen, with tears slipping down his face, whispered his own prayer:
“Lord… help me believe what You say about me.”
That was the beginning of healing.
Not just in his knee.
But in his heart.
Because sometimes the first breakthrough is not getting back on the court.
Sometimes the first breakthrough is learning that even when life wounds you, God’s Word still stands, God’s Love still covers, and God’s purpose remains.

Sacred Pause
Take a moment and sit with these questions before the Lord:
- Have I tied my worth to performance, success, sports, appearance, or what others think of me?
- When disappointment hits, what voice do I listen to most—God’s truth or my discouragement?
- What words have I been repeating to myself that do not agree with God’s Word?
- What truth from Scripture do I need to keep in my mouth Today?
Pause and ask the Lord:
“Let there be life on my lips, Lord. Teach me to speak what You say.”
Prayer for the Journey
Father in Heaven,
Thank You for seeing us when we are discouraged, disappointed, and weary. Thank You for caring not only about our victories, but also about our wounds.
Help us to meditate on Your Word day and night. Teach us to obey You, trust You, and speak truth even when our hearts feel weak. Guard us from the lie that our value depends on performance, popularity, talent, or success.
Let there be life on our lips.
Let there be life in our thoughts.
Let there be life in our hearts.
Heal what is broken in us—physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Strengthen every young person who feels left behind, overlooked, or defeated. Remind them that their identity is not in what they do, but in who they are in Christ.
Help us to minister to one another with compassion, truth, and faithfulness. Make us the kind of friends who sit beside the hurting, speak life to the discouraged, and point one another back to Jesus.
We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus,
Amen.
Prayer of Repentance
Merciful Lord,
Forgive me for the times I have believed lies about my worth. Forgive me for the times I have measured myself by success, performance, or the approval of others instead of by Your Love.
Forgive me for speaking death over myself with words of despair, fear, shame, or defeat. Cleanse my heart of bitterness, pride, envy, and unbelief. Renew my mind by Your Holy Spirit.
Teach me to meditate on Your Word day and night. Help me not only to hear it, but to obey it. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Just Give Today
Today, if you feel discouraged, do not preach despair to yourself.
Choose one truth from God’s Word and speak it aloud.
Try these:
- God is with me in this season.
- My worth is in Christ, not in my performance.
- This setback does not cancel God’s purpose.
- The Lord will strengthen me one step at a time.
- Let there be life on my lips.
Sometimes healing begins with one faithful step, one honest prayer, and one truth spoken aloud.
Just give Today.
