Crossing Over

Day’s Journey — And God Began to Rebuild

Scripture:
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”
Genesis 1:1–2

Opening Prayer

Father, quiet my heart before You. Help me receive Your Word without forcing meaning or running ahead of You. Where there has been darkness, speak Your light. Where there has been disorder, establish Your peace. Where there have been ruins, teach me to recognize Your work of restoration. In Jesus’ name, amen.

I dreamed I was leaving the neighborhood where I had lived as a child.

To leave it, I had to cross a busy road—a road I had crossed many times when I was young.

Every time I thought it was safe to cross, cars seemed to appear from nowhere. I kept waiting.

Finally, a group of godly men dressed in white stepped forward and made a way for me to cross.

And then I reached the other side.

What I saw there astonished me.

New homes were being built.

The place that had once seemed broken, destroyed, and desolate was being restored.

I stood looking at it in awe.

My uncle was there, happy and excited. He told me he was moving into his new home.

My daughter was moving into a new home too. She carefully organized things and put everything in its proper place.

An older woman was also there, and she seemed to want to help me find a new home of my own.

Before leaving, I wanted to hug my daughter.

But I had to wait.

Someone was placing what looked like a robe around her.

Only after she had been covered could I embrace her.

I waited.

And I did get to hold her.

But then I had to leave.

I remember feeling sad because I wanted to stay with her.

Later, as I wrote the dream in my journal, my thoughts were drawn to Genesis 1.

And suddenly I noticed something.

Genesis does not begin with everything beautiful and finished.

It begins with emptiness.

Darkness.

Formlessness.

And then:

“The Spirit of God was hovering…”
— Genesis 1:2

God was already present over what looked unfinished.

Then God spoke.

“Let there be light.”
— Genesis 1:3

Light entered darkness.

Then God began separating things.

Light from darkness.

Water from water.

Sea from dry ground.

God established boundaries.

He created order.

And what initially appeared empty became a place capable of sustaining life.

Again and again, Genesis says:

“And God saw that it was good.”

Perhaps that is what touched me so deeply about the dream.

I was leaving a place connected with my childhood.

Behind me was the old neighborhood.

Before me was construction.

Not destruction.

Construction.

Something was being built.

Something was being prepared.

And perhaps there are seasons when God’s work in our lives looks exactly like that.

We think we are standing among ruins.

But heaven sees a construction site.

We see what happened there.

God sees what can be built there.

We remember what was destroyed.

God begins establishing something new.

Isaiah later describes this kind of restoration:

“They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated.”
— Isaiah 61:4

My daughter’s part of the dream also stays with me, too.

She was putting things in order.

That too reflects Genesis.

God did not merely create.

He ordered creation.

Everything was given its place.

And before I could embrace my daughter, she was covered.

I cannot say with certainty what every symbol in a dream means.

But the image causes me to pray.

Because Scripture often uses garments to speak of covering, dignity, righteousness, and restoration.

Isaiah writes:

“He has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of His righteousness.”
— Isaiah 61:10

Perhaps the invitation for me is simply this:

Let God cover those I Love.

I do not have to be the covering.

I do not have to arrange every detail of their lives.

I do not have to hold them so tightly that I interfere with what God is doing.

Sometimes Love waits.

Sometimes Love watches.

Sometimes Love embraces.

And sometimes Love releases.

That part hurts.

I wanted to stay.

But I could not.

Maybe some crossings belong to us and other crossings belong to those we Love.

I can walk with my daughter for part of her journey.

I can pray.

I can Love.

I can embrace her when the door opens.

But ultimately, her life belongs to God.

And so does mine.

And then I remember that older woman.

While everyone else seemed to be moving into their new homes, she appeared interested in helping me.

Maybe that is something I need to remember.

I am not only watching restoration happen for everyone else.

There may be rebuilding for me too.

Genesis 1 reminds me that God does not look at emptiness and conclude that nothing can live there.

He speaks.

He creates.

He separates.

He orders.

He fills.

He blesses.

And eventually, where there was emptiness, life appears.

Where there was darkness, there is light.

Where there was chaos, there is order.

Where there was desolation, something beautiful begins to rise.

Maybe the message I need Today is very simple:

Do not mistake the construction site for abandonment.

God may still be building.

Sacred Pause

Sit quietly for a moment.

Picture the road again.

Behind you is what has been.

Ahead of you is what is being built.

You do not have to run through traffic.

You do not have to force the crossing.

Ask:

Lord, what are You asking me to leave behind?

Then ask:

What are You rebuilding that I have only been able to see as ruins?

And finally:

Where are You asking me to trust Your covering over someone I Love?

Remain there for a moment without demanding an answer.

Let God be God.

Prayer of Repentance

Father, forgive me for the times I have believed that what was broken could never be restored.

Forgive me when fear has caused me to run ahead of You or when anxiety has convinced me that I must control the crossing.

Forgive me for trying to carry responsibilities that belong to You.

Forgive me when I have struggled to entrust the people I Love into Your hands.

Wash me through the mercy of Jesus.

Create in me a clean heart and renew a steadfast Spirit within me.

Teach me to wait for Your timing, receive Your covering, and walk faithfully into whatever You are building.

Amen.

Today’s Prayer

Creator God,

You hovered over the darkness before there was light.

You saw possibility where there appeared to be emptiness.

Speak again into the unfinished places of my life.

Where there has been destruction, rebuild.

Where there has been confusion, establish order.

Where there has been grief, bring Your comfort.

Where there has been fear, make a safe way forward.

Cover my children and those I Love.

Teach me when to hold them and when to release them into Your care.

And when I look at what appears unfinished, remind me:

You are still creating.

You are still restoring.

You are still building.

Help me trust the God who looked upon His creation and declared:

“It was very good.”
— Genesis 1:31

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
