Gratitude in Difficult Times: Lessons from Psalm 145

A Psalm of Praise: A Song of God’s Majesty and Love

Psalm 145

1 I will extol You, my God, O King, and I will bless Your Name forever and ever. 2 Every day I will bless You, and I will praise Your Name forever and ever. 3 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised. His greatness is unsearchable.

4 One generation shall praise Your works to another, and declare Your mighty acts! 5 I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, and Your wondrous works.”

David wrote most of the Psalms while hiding in caves and fleeing from King Saul. We live in a time when inconvenience shakes our little kingdoms. Our default is to complain, and we waste our energy from our reserve. We express complaints rather than gratitude; gratitude is like an emergency savings account. King Saul wanted David dead because of his anointing and God’s favor upon him. David had to flee to preserve his life.

I’ve shared that not having something as simple as a can opener brought me to tears. This morning, as I poured my coffee, I remembered to appreciate even the minor things. These small things are things to be grateful for. I thanked the LORD for the coffee, sugar, creamer, my home, bed, etc., you get it, right? Only those who know know, and those who don’t miss the true meaning of thanksgiving and worship. I recommend that you prime gratitude out of the well of complacency.

David was a man after God’s own heart. David was excluded from his family. He was treated with indifference and made to shepherd the flocks in the field. Meanwhile, his brothers and father enjoyed the fruit of David’s labor. David praised the LORD. He wrote many beautiful Psalms for us, and we can ponder the God of all creation through them. Psalm 145 declares God’s mighty acts, character, majesty, and care for His beloved who praises Him for His goodness. The praise and honor are His alone. The true meaning of gratitude and praise is also a gift from God.

Heavenly Father,

LORD of all creation, I bless Your Holy Name. I worship You alone and not the things You created. Thank You for providing everything we need in accordance with the richness of Your mercy. Forgiving me for overlooking even the smallest details, and acting entitled.

Today, let us ponder Your goodness, mercy, and everlasting Love through Jesus Christ, Your Son. Let Your eternal arms embrace us. Comfort those who grieve the loss of loved ones. We are on our journey heavenward, where we will be united into the Kingdom of God. I pray for travel mercies; let no weapons of the evil one and wicked men/women succeed against our loved ones. Appoint Your angels as divine protectors. Please give our loved ones and us the necessary provisions. Let Your abounding Love and faithfulness follow us as we travel to our destinations. Bring home safely.

I shout praises to the LORD in caps. I declare in Jesus ‘ mighty name. THANK YOU, ABBA, FOR HEARING AND ANSWERING MY PRAYERS, AMEN!
