The Overflowing Cup
Scripture:
“My cup overflows.”
— Psalm 23:5
Reflection:
There was a time when my cup was empty —
cracked by loss, drained by striving, dry from trying to fill myself with what could never satisfy.
But one day, the Shepherd came. He didn’t scold me for being empty.
He picked up the cup, held it close to His heart, and began to pour.
At first, I thought He was giving me only what I had lost.
But the more He poured, the more I realized — this wasn’t about replacing what was gone. This was about revealing what could never be taken.
The oil of His presence filled every crack, sealing what was broken.
The water of His Spirit rose to the brim and began to spill over —
into places I didn’t even know were dry.
Now, when I walk, I don’t carry an empty vessel.
I carry the overflow of grace.
Every act of love, every word of kindness.
Every breath of gratitude is a stream from that overflow.
This is abundance — not wealth or ease, but the quiet fullness of knowing that God is enough. That even when life pours itself out of me, He keeps refilling, again and again.
When the Shepherd anoints your head with oil, you begin to shine from the inside out.
And when your cup runs over, you no longer fear the emptiness —
because you’ve learned who the Source is.
Repentance:
LORD, forgive me for trying to live out of scarcity,
for hoarding blessings that were meant to flow through me.
Teach me to trust that You never run dry, and that the more I pour out in love,
the more You fill me again.
Journal Prompt:
Think of a time when you felt “empty,” and how God met you there.
What did He fill you with — peace, hope, forgiveness, purpose?
How might you now pour from that overflow into someone else’s life?
Sacred Pause:
Pause here.
Picture the Shepherd’s hands holding your cup.
He pours until it overflows —
not in waste, but in abundance.
Let the overflow touch the ground around you,
watering seeds you didn’t even know you’d planted.
Anchor Scripture:
“And God can bless you abundantly,
so that in all things at all times, having all that you need,
you will abound in every good work.”
— 2 Corinthians 9:8
Closing Prayer — The Overflowing Cup
O Shepherd of my soul,
You have filled the empty places I once thought would never live again.
You have poured oil on every wound,
and living water into every dry well of my heart.
You did not demand that I be strong.
You met me in my weakness and called it beautiful,
because it was there that Your strength could be made perfect.
Now, my cup overflows —not because of what I hold,
but because of who holds me.
Thank You, Lord, for the abundance that never ends:
For the peace that rises in the morning,
For the mercy that greets me in my failures,
For the grace that flows through my hands into the world.
Teach me to pour without fear, to give without calculation, to love without measure.
Let my life become a river of thanksgiving, a vessel of Your compassion, a song of Your goodness that never runs dry.
And when the day is done, let me find myself resting again at Your table —
Let my heart be whole, my cup is running over, my soul is content in You alone.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Soli Deo Gloria
