Tearing Down Altars:

The Idol of Approval and Identity

Day’s Journey Devotional Series
Soli Deo Gloria

“I am the LORD; that is My Name!
I will not give My glory to another.”
Isaiah 42:8

Introduction

Some altars are inherited before we ever know God’s Name. I have not read yet in the Bible that God’s people tenderly dismantled the idols; they violently destroyed idols.

The idol of approval is often formed early—through family systems, trauma, rejection, performance, or survival. It quietly teaches us that Love must be earned, identity must be proven, and belonging must be negotiated.

But God never asked us to earn what He freely gives.

Morning Devotional

Who Am I Without the Applause?

Scripture Anchors:

  • Isaiah 42:8
  • Matthew 3:16–17

Before Jesus healed the sick…
Before He preached a sermon…
Before He went to the Cross…

The Father spoke:

“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Jesus’ identity was established before His ministry—not after it.

The idol of approval tempts us to reverse this order. It says: Do more, be more, prove yourself. But God says: You are Mine—now walk with Me.

When approval becomes identity, obedience becomes performance, and the altar remains standing.

Sacred Pause

Sit quietly with the Lord.

  • Where have I confused approval with identity?
  • Who taught me that I had to earn Love?

Noon Reflection

Renouncing False Identity

Scripture Anchor:

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”
2 Corinthians 5:17

False identity always demands sacrifice.
True identity rests in Christ.

What we are not healed from, we often worship. What we do not surrender, we protect. God does not expose these altars to shame us—He reveals them to heal us.

Renouncing false identity is choosing truth over survival.

 Daily Renunciation Prayer

(Pray aloud if possible)

In the Name of Jesus Christ,
I renounce the idol of approval and every false identity formed through rejection, performance, or fear.
I renounce the lie that I must earn love, belonging, or worth.
I receive my identity as a beloved child of God, secured by grace alone.
I declare that my life is hidden with Christ in God.
Amen.

Evening Devotional

Resting in Being Known by God

Scripture Anchors:

  • Psalm 139:1–4
  • Colossians 3:1–3

To be fully known and fully loved is holy ground.

God knows every name you were called, every label you carried, every altar built to survive—and He calls you Beloved. Tonight, we rest in the truth that identity in Christ does not fluctuate with opinion or performance.

The altar of approval falls when we finally believe this.

Sacred Pause

As the day closes, reflect:

  • What label did God gently remove today?
  • Where did I feel invited to rest instead of perform?

Evening Prayer of Repentance & Rest

Abba Father,
Forgive me for every way I sought identity apart from You. Heal the places where approval replaced intimacy and performance replaced trust. Thank You for calling me Yours. As I rest tonight, anchor my heart in who You say I am.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

 Closing Doxology

Praise and glory to God Almighty,
The True and Living God.
He calls us by name.
He restores our identity.
Soli Deo Gloria.
