Lord God,
Forgive me for mistaking control for care.
and manipulation for Love.
Teach me again—slowly—what Love truly is.
In Jesus’ Name, amen.

What Love Is Not — And What Love Is

Day’s Journey — Micro Devotional

Scripture Sidebars

“There is no fear in Love; but perfect love casts out fear.”
1 John 4:18

“Arise, shine; for your light has come!”
Isaiah 60:1

Reflection

For a long time, I didn’t know what Love looked like.

What I called “emotional Love” was really attachment with conditions.
Approval had to be earned. A walk in the yard, while being watched.
Affection could be withdrawn. A moment of approval turned quickly to shame.
Silence was punishment.
Emotional abuse; they only speak after you submit

Love felt like strings—
pulled, poked, and tightened by an unseen taskmaster.

When my eyes were opened, I realized something important:
It wasn’t only a person.
It was a spirit working through a person.

Then God led me to the light.

Isaiah 60 reminded me that light does not manipulate.
It does not threaten.
It does not confuse.

Love does not control.
Love does not gaslight.
Love does not demand your silence.

God’s Love brings clarity, safety, and peace.
It frees instead of binds.
It restores instead of diminishing.

And when the light comes,
you begin to recognize what love was never meant to be
and what it truly is.

Sacred Pause

Place one hand over your heart.

Breathe in truth.
Release fear.

Say gently:
“God’s love does not come with strings.”

Prayer

Jesus, forgive me for imagining You as a taskmaster.
Teach me the shape of Your Love.
Heal the places where fear replaced safety.
Let Your light redefine what Love means in my life.

I choose truth.
I choose freedom.
I choose Your Love.

Amen.
