Who Are We Building For?
In 1 Corinthians 3, Paul speaks honestly to the church because they were acting immaturely. They were arguing over which leader to follow. One said, “I follow Paul,” and another said, “I follow Apollos.” Paul told them this kind of jealousy and quarreling showed they were still thinking in a worldly way.
That message still matters now.
A lot of people Today celebrate numbers—followers, likes, attention, popularity, and influence. It can start to feel like being seen is the same as being successful. But Paul reminds us that people are only servants. No leader, speaker, influencer, or public figure is the foundation. Jesus is.
Paul planted.
Apollos watered.
But God made it grow.
That means each person has an assignment, but only God gives life, fruit, and increase.
So the real question is not “How many people are following?“
The real question is, who are they following?
And even deeper: Which kingdom is being built?
If we are building for God’s Kingdom, then Jesus must stay at the center. We cannot build on popularity, pride, or the need to be admired. We build by serving, loving, obeying, and staying faithful to the task God has given us.
You may not have a huge platform.
You may not be noticed by crowds.
But if you are building on Christ, your life matters in the Kingdom of God.
Faithfulness is greater than attention.
Obedience is greater than applause.
And glory belongs to God alone.
Sacred Pause
Take a quiet moment and ask:
Am I trying to build my name, or am I helping build God’s Kingdom?
Do I care more about attention or about faithfulness?
Is Jesus truly the foundation of what I am building?
A prayer of repentance and renewal
Lord Jesus,
Forgive me for the times I have wanted attention more than obedience. Forgive me for comparison, jealousy, pride, and every way I have been impressed by numbers instead of by faithfulness. Cleanse my heart from the need to be seen and teach me to build on You alone.
Help me be faithful to the part You have given me. Teach me to serve with humility, Love others well, and remember that all growth comes from God. Let my life build something that honors Your Kingdom, not my own name.
In Jesus’ Name, amen.
When Jesus is the foundation, faithfulness matters more than followers.
