The Prayer Closet

Jesus said,
“Go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen.”

For a long time, I understood part of what He meant. I knew He was teaching us not to pray for attention, not to perform for others, not to seek approval by appearing spiritual.

But I still wondered…

Why a closet?

Why such a small, hidden place?

I did not fully understand until life pressed me into it.

There came a season when my peace was constantly interrupted. Even in moments when I tried to pray, I would be distracted, watched, or pulled away. My heart was weary. My soul was thirsty. I did not need an audience—I needed God.

One day, worn down and longing for quiet, I went into my walk-in closet.

Not to appear holy.
Not to be seen.
Not to be religious.

But because I needed peace.
I needed stillness.
I needed to hear His voice.

And there, in that small, hidden place, something changed.

The interruptions stopped.

The door closed, and for the first time in a long while, it felt like the world was shut out and heaven drew near. It was as if the Lord Himself stood guard over that space. The one who had interrupted me before did not enter. He did not knock.

The closet became more than a place.

It became a refuge.

Psalm 63 began to live in me:
“O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You…”

And I realized something I had not fully seen before:

Jesus was not only teaching us how to pray.
He was showing us where to meet Him safely.

Because we do have an enemy—one who distracts, disrupts, and looks for ways to pull us away from intimacy with God. But we also have a Protector.

When we enter into that quiet place with the Lord, we are not alone.

He covers.
He guards.
He meets us there.

The prayer closet is not only about being hidden from people.

It is about being held by God.

A place where the noise quiets,
where the soul can breathe,
where the heart can speak honestly,
and where the voice of the Father becomes clear again.

And sometimes… it is not about religion at all.

It is about survival.
It is about healing.
It is about being near to the One who restores us.

Sacred Pause

Where is my “closet”—the place where I can meet God without distraction?

Have I been trying to connect with God in noise when He is inviting me into quiet?

Do I trust that God meets me personally, not just publicly?

Prayer of Repentance

Lord Jesus, forgive me for the times I have neglected quiet time with You or treated prayer casually and distractedly. Forgive me for seeking You in ways that do not allow me to truly listen. Draw me into a deeper place of intimacy with You. Teach me to close the door to distractions and open my heart fully to You. Be my refuge, my covering, and my peace. Amen
