Called Out of the Shadows

John 8:12

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, ‘I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”
— John 8:12

There was a time when I lived and walked in darkness, though I did not fully understand how dark it was. Darkness can become familiar when we have lived in it long enough. We learn how to move through it, survive in it, and even name it normal.

But when Christ brought me into His Light, I began to see what I could not see before.

In my mind’s eye, when I look back at the past, I see shadows lurking about—watchers waiting for me to fail, waiting for me to return to fear, shame, confusion, or despair. Some may call them demons, and yes, some darkness is spiritual warfare. But I have also come to recognize that many of those shadows were wounded places within me—inner children exiled by pain, fear, rejection, and sorrow; I don’t call them demons. They are parts of me left behind, guarded by the beast of shame, who no longer has authority over them.

They were not waiting to destroy me.
Some were waiting to be rescued.

They were parts of my heart that had been hidden away because the pain was too much to carry at the time. They stayed in the dark until the Light of Christ reached them. And now, by His mercy, I pray He calls every hidden place out of darkness and into His healing Presence.

Jesus does not shame what He brings into the Light.
He heals it.

He does not despise the brokenhearted.
He gathers them.

He does not abandon the little ones who were left behind in the shadows.
He calls them by name and brings them home.

The Light of Christ is not harsh like an accusation. It is holy, gentle, truthful, and full of mercy. His Light exposes what needs healing, but it also covers what has been wounded. He is not only the Light of the world; He is the Light of life.

And whoever follows Him will never walk in darkness again.

They may remember the dark.
They may grieve what happened there.
They may still need healing in places once hidden.

But they are no longer alone in the shadows.

Christ has come.
The Light has entered.
And His healing Presence is calling every exiled place home.

Sacred Pause

Lord Jesus, where have I hidden parts of my heart because they were too painful to face?

What shadows from the past still feel like they are watching me, accusing me, or waiting for me to fail?

Come, Light of the world.
Call every wounded place into Your healing Presence.

Prayer of Repentance and Healing

Lord Jesus,
You are the Light of the world and the Light of life.

I repent for the times I learned to live in darkness as though it were home. I repent for agreeing with shame, fear, rejection, and despair. I repent for hiding wounded places from You, as if Your mercy could not reach them.

Forgive me for believing the shadows had more power than Your Presence.

Call every exiled place within me out of darkness and into Your Light. Gather the broken pieces of my heart. Heal the little one within me who felt forgotten, unseen, or unsafe. Let Your Love enter the places where fear once lived.

Thank You, Lord, that You do not shame what You reveal. You heal what You bring into the Light.

I choose to follow You.
I choose Your Light.
I choose Your life.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

Soli Deo Gloria
