Mahle and Wise Friends

Children’s Day’s Journey

Memory Verse:
“Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”
— Proverbs 13:20

One quiet afternoon, Mahle the spotted lamb wandered near the edge of the meadow.

The grass was soft.
The breeze was gentle.
The flowers nodded in the sunlight.

But Mahle’s heart felt a little confused.

He had been thinking about friends.

Some friends made him feel peaceful and helped him remember the Shepherd’s voice. But other friends made him feel hurried, worried, or tempted to do things he knew were not right.

Mahle looked up into the old oak tree and saw Rafi-Owl sitting on a branch.

“Rafi-Owl,” Mahle called, “may I ask you something?”

Rafi-Owl blinked his big, kind eyes.

“Of course, Mahle,” he said. “A wise question is a good beginning.”

Mahle stepped closer.

“How do I know if someone is a wise friend?”

Rafi-Owl ruffled his feathers and looked kindly at the little lamb.

“A wise friend,” said Rafi-Owl, “helps you stay close to the Shepherd.”

Mahle tilted his head. “Do they always agree with me?”

“Oh no,” Rafi-Owl said gently. “A wise friend may tell you the truth when you need to hear it. But they will speak with kindness, not cruelty.”

Mahle thought about that.

“So a wise friend does not try to lead me away from what is right?”

“That is correct,” said Rafi-Owl. “A wise friend will not laugh when you choose obedience. They will not pull you toward danger. They will not make you feel ashamed for loving the Shepherd.”

Mahle looked down at his little spotted feet.

“I once followed someone who said he was my friend,” Mahle whispered, “but he led me into trouble.”

Rafi-Owl’s voice grew soft.

“Yes, Mahle. Not everyone who walks beside you is leading you somewhere safe.”

Mahle’s ears drooped.

“But the Shepherd found me,” he said.

“Yes,” said Rafi-Owl. “And now the Shepherd is teaching you wisdom.”

Just then, a few lambs ran past the meadow, laughing loudly.

“Come on, Mahle!” they called. “Let’s sneak away where no one can see us!”

Mahle froze.

His heart started beating fast.

Rafi-Owl did not shout.
He did not scold.
He said, “Pause, little lamb.”

Mahle took a deep breath.

“Pause,” he repeated.

Then Rafi-Owl said, “Ask your heart: Will this choice lead me closer to the Shepherd, or farther away?”

Mahle looked at the path where the lambs had gone.

Then he looked toward the Shepherd’s field.

“I think it would lead me away,” Mahle said.

Rafi-Owl nodded. “That is wisdom speaking.”

Mahle smiled a little.

“I do not have to follow every voice that calls me.”

“No,” said Rafi-Owl. “You belong to the Shepherd. His voice is the one you follow.”

Mahle stood taller.

“I want friends who help me walk with the Shepherd,” he said. “And I want to be that kind of friend too.”

Rafi-Owl’s eyes warmed.

“That is a very wise prayer, Mahle.”

So Mahle stayed near the meadow.

He did not follow the foolish path.
He listened for the Shepherd’s voice.
And he remembered:

Wise friends help us walk toward what is good.
Wise friends tell the truth with Love.
Wise friends do not pull us away from Jesus.
And the wisest Friend of all is the Shepherd, who never leaves His lambs alone.

Little Lesson

A wise friend helps you choose what is right.

A wise friend may say:

“Let’s tell the truth.”
“Let’s be kind.”
“Let’s not go there.”
“Let’s ask for help.”
“Let’s do what honors God.”

Good friends help your heart stay close to Jesus.
