Mahle Stays Near the Lion
Children’s Day’s Journey Reflection
Memory Verse:
“Be wise as snakes and innocent as doves.”
— Matthew 10:16
One quiet afternoon, Mahle the spotted lamb walked along the edge of the meadow.
The grass was soft beneath his little hooves, and the flowers nodded in the breeze. But Mahle’s heart felt heavy.
Some of the other lambs had laughed at him.
“You think you’re better than us,” one lamb said.
“Why do you always listen for the Shepherd?” another teased.
Mahle did not think he was better than anyone. He only wanted to follow the Shepherd’s voice. But their words hurt his heart.

So Mahle walked away from the meadow and sat near the lake. His ears drooped low.
“I feel alone,” Mahle whispered.
Just then, the Lion came near. His steps were strong, but His eyes were kind.

“Mahle,” the Lion said gently, “why is your heart so heavy?”
Mahle looked up at Him.
“They laughed at me because I want to follow the Shepherd,” Mahle said. “They made me feel like something is wrong with me.”

The Lion sat beside him.
“There is nothing wrong with you for wanting to stay close to Me,” the Lion said.
Mahle leaned against the Lion’s warm mane.
“But it hurts when others reject me,” Mahle whispered.
“I know,” said the Lion. “I was rejected, too.”
Mahle’s eyes grew wide. “You were?”
“Yes,” said the Lion. “Some people did not understand Me. Some turned away from Me. Some spoke against Me. But I kept loving, and I kept walking in the Father’s will.”
Mahle was quiet for a moment.
“Does that mean I should just follow anyone, even if they are unkind?” he asked.
The Lion shook His head gently.
“No, little lamb. I told My followers to be wise and innocent. That means you can be kind without being foolish. You can love others without following them into danger. You can forgive others without letting them lead your heart away from what is good.”
Mahle listened closely.
“So if someone tries to pull me away from You,” Mahle said, “I can say no?”
“Yes,” said the Lion. “That is wisdom.”
“And if someone is unkind to me?” Mahle asked.
“You can ask for help,” said the Lion. “You do not have to carry hurt alone.”
Mahle looked down at the lake.
“Sometimes when my heart hurts, I feel very small inside.”
The Lion moved closer.

“When your heart feels too heavy, come near Me,” He said. “And go to safe helpers too. A shepherd. A teacher. A parent. A counselor. Someone who will protect you and listen with Love.”
Mahle nodded slowly.
The Lion continued, “Your life is precious. When dark thoughts come, do not stay alone. Tell someone right away. You are not weak for asking for help. You are loved, Mahle.”
A tear rolled down Mahle’s soft cheek.
“I am loved?” he asked.
“You are loved,” said the Lion. “You are seen. You are not alone. You belong close to Me.”
Mahle took a deep breath.
The lake sparkled in the sunlight.
Then Mahle remembered:
He did not have to follow every voice.
He did not have to believe every unkind word.
He did not have to walk into danger to be accepted.
He could stay near the Lion.
The Lion stood and looked toward the path of life.
“Come, Mahle,” He said. “Walk with Me.”
Mahle stood beside Him.
His heart still felt tender, but it no longer felt alone.
Together, they walked back toward the safe pasture.
And Mahle learned that following the Lion did not mean everyone would understand him.
But the Lion understood.
And that was enough to keep walking.

Little Lesson
Jesus teaches us to be wise and gentle.
Being wise means:
“I do not have to follow someone into trouble.”
“I can say no.”
“I can ask for help.”
“I can stay close to Jesus.”
Being gentle means:
“I do not have to be mean back.”
“I can forgive.”
“I can speak kindly.”
“I can let Jesus care for my heart.”
Safety Pause for Children
If your heart ever feels very sad, scared, or too heavy, do not stay alone.
Tell a safe grown-up right away:
“Can you help me? My heart feels heavy.”
You can tell a parent, teacher, counselor, pastor, coach, school officer, or another trusted adult.
Your life is precious to God.
You are worth protecting.
You are not alone.
Reflection Question

Prayer of Repentance and Trust
Dear Jesus,
Thank You for being my Good Shepherd and my Lion of Love.
Please forgive me for the times I have followed the wrong voices or tried to be accepted by people who were leading me away from You.
Help me be wise and gentle. Help me say no to danger. Help me ask for help when my heart feels heavy.
Thank You that I am loved.
Thank You that I am seen.
Thank You for letting me know that I am not alone.
Keep me close to You.
Keep my loved ones safe.
Help me walk on the path of life.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
