Sheep Among Wolves

Day’s Journey Reflection

Scripture Anchor:
“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore, be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.”
— Matthew 10:16

Jesus did not hide the cost of following Him.

He told the apostles plainly that He was sending them out like sheep among wolves. He did not tell them this to frighten them, but to prepare them. They were not being sent out helplessly; they were being sent out under His authority, with His Spirit, for His Kingdom.

He told them to be shrewd as snakes and innocent as doves.

There is a holy balance in that instruction.

We are not called to be naïve.
We are not called to ignore danger.
We are not called to trust every voice, every room, or every invitation.

But we are also not called to become hardened, bitter, suspicious, or cruel.

Jesus calls us to walk with wisdom and purity. To discern without becoming hateful. To be watchful without becoming fearful. To be prepared without surrendering our peace.

He told His disciples they would be handed over to local councils, flogged in synagogues, and brought before governors and kings because of Him. Yet even then, He told them not to worry about what to say or how to say it. At the appointed time, the words would be given.

“It will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.”

What a comfort.

The Spirit of the Father speaks through surrendered vessels.

Jesus also warned that betrayal would come close. Brother would betray brother. Families would be torn because of His Name. That kind of rejection cuts deeply, especially when it comes from those we Love.

I, too, have known what it is to be misunderstood among my own. I have been called “holier than thou.” At first, the rejection was painful. But over time, the LORD has shown me something deeper.

It is painful to be rejected for loving Jesus.
But it is more painful to live without Him.

Not only because eternity is real, but because I know what life was like without His Presence. I know what fear felt like without His peace. I know what emptiness feels like without His nearness. I know what wandering felt like before He called me home.

When Cain murdered Abel, and the LORD confronted him, Cain cried out under the weight of being driven from the Presence of the LORD. Even in judgment, the loss he feared most was separation from God.

That is a sobering thing.

The Presence of the LORD is not a small gift.
It is our life.
It is our refuge.
It is our strength.
It is our wisdom among wolves.
It is our innocence among a crooked generation.

So we pray:

Keep us in Your Presence, O LORD.

Teach us to be wise without becoming proud.
Teach us to be innocent without becoming foolish.
Teach us to be bold without becoming harsh.
Teach us to witness without fear.
Teach us to love even when we are rejected.

May Your Kingdom come.
May Your will be done.
On earth as it is in Heaven.

And may many be brought into the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.

Sacred Pause

Where have I allowed rejection to harden my heart?

Take a quiet moment and pray:

Lord, keep me tender in Your Presence, even when the world feels like wolves.

Prayer of Repentance and Surrender

Heavenly Father,

I come before You in the Name of Jesus Christ. Forgive me for the times I have feared rejection more than I trusted Your Presence. Forgive me for the times I have allowed misunderstanding, criticism, or betrayal to harden my heart.

Forgive me for the moments I wanted to defend myself more than I wanted to bear witness to You.

Lord, make me wise as a serpent and innocent as a dove. Teach me to discern what is dangerous without becoming bitter. Teach me to walk in wisdom without losing compassion. Teach me to speak truth without pride and to love without fear.

Holy Spirit, speak through me when I do not know what to say. Guard my heart when persecution comes close. Strengthen me when rejection hurts. Keep me faithful to Jesus Christ.

Keep my loved ones and me in Your Presence, O LORD. Do not let us drift away from Your truth, Your Love, or Your Kingdom purpose.

Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done.
On earth as it is in Heaven.

Bring many into Your Kingdom. In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
