Day’s Journey Children’s Ministry: Orrin Carrying Heavy Burdens

Orrin and the Heavy Bag of Unforgiveness

With Joppa, Millo, and Friends

Quiet Prayer
Dear Jesus, help us understand Forgiveness with gentle hearts. Teach us how to give You the heavy things we were never meant to carry. Amen.

One sunny afternoon, Joppa the Ostrich and Millo the little bird were walking along the meadow path with Mahle the Spotted Lamb, Rafi-Owl, Hippi the Hippo, Mr. T Porky Pine, Wally the Warthog, and Lion.

The birds were singing.
The flowers were dancing in the breeze.
And Hippi was splashing happily in the lake.

But then Joppa stopped.

“Do you hear that?” she asked.

Everyone grew quiet.

Scrape. Thump. Scrape. Thump.

Coming down the path was Orrin, the young ox. He had a yoke across his shoulders, but this time he was not carrying wood or tools.

He was carrying a heavy, dark bag.

Orrin’s head hung low. His steps were slow. His eyes looked tired.

Mahle whispered, “What is in his bag?”

Rafi-Owl flew closer and looked carefully. “That bag is full of old hurts.”

Orrin sighed. “It is called unforgiveness.”

Joppa’s eyes softened. “Oh, Orrin. That is a very heavy thing to carry.”

Orrin nodded. “Someone hurt me. I said I forgave them, but my heart still hurts. I keep thinking about what happened. I keep carrying the memory, the anger, and the sadness.”

Millo chirped gently, “Does forgiving mean pretending it did not hurt?”

“No,” said Lion, stepping near with kindness in His eyes. “Forgiveness does not mean pretending the wound was small. It means bringing the heavy burden to Me.”

Orrin looked confused. “But if I forgive, do I have to let them hurt me again?”

Lion shook His mane gently. “No, Orrin. Forgiveness gives the burden to God. Wisdom helps you walk safely.”

Rafi-Owl opened his Bible and read:

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28

Orrin looked at the heavy bag on his back. “I am weary,” he whispered.

Joppa stepped closer. “You do not have to carry that bag alone.”

Mahle said, “You can tell Jesus the truth.”

Hippi called from the lake, “And hope can rise again!”

Wally the Warthog nodded. “Sometimes a heart needs time to heal.”

Mr. T Porky Pine said gently, “Forgiveness is not rushing. It is releasing the weight to God one step at a time.”

Orrin took a deep breath.

“Jesus,” he prayed softly, “this is too heavy for me. I give You the hurt, the anger, and the sadness. Help me forgive without pretending it did not matter. Help me heal.”

As Orrin prayed, the dark bag began to loosen.

It did not disappear with a loud sound.
It did not fly away all at once. He cast them over to Lion.

But it grew lighter. Orrin stood a little taller.

Lion smiled. “That is the beginning of freedom.”

Orrin looked at his friends. “So forgiveness does not mean I was not hurt?”

“No,” said Joppa. “Your hurt matters.”

“And forgiveness does not mean I have to carry bitterness?” Orrin asked.

“No,” said Rafi-Owl. “Bitterness is too heavy for your heart.”

“And forgiveness does not mean I must go back where I am not safe?” Orrin asked.

“No,” said Lion. “I will teach you wisdom and peace.”

Orrin smiled gently.

For the first time in a long while, the path ahead did not look so heavy.

He was still healing. He was still learning. But he was not alone.

And Orrin remembered:

Forgiveness is giving Jesus the burden, so bitterness no longer has to ride on your back.

Heart Lesson

Sometimes people hurt us, and our hearts feel heavy. Forgiveness does not mean saying, “It was okay.” Forgiveness does not mean pretending we are not sad.

Forgiveness means we give the hurt, anger, and bitterness to Jesus because they are too heavy for us to carry. Jesus cares about our wounds. Jesus helps us heal and teaches us wisdom and safety.

Memory Verse

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28

  4. How can we be kind to someone whose heart is hurting?

Prayer of Repentance

Dear Jesus,

Please forgive me for the times I carried anger, sadness, and bitterness in my heart. Forgive me for thinking forgiveness meant pretending I was not hurt.

Help me give You the heavy things I cannot carry. Help me forgive in truth, heal with wisdom, and walk in peace.

Thank You for caring about my heart. In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

Prayer for our Children

Lord Jesus,

Please help every child who has been hurt. Let them know their pain matters to You. Help them bring their heavy feelings to You, little by little.

Teach us to forgive without pretending, heal without rushing, and walk safely with wisdom.

Thank You that Your Love is gentle, patient, and strong.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

Soli Deo Gloria
