Day’s Journey Youth: Love is Not Fast Food

Choosing Jesus When Others Mock You

Kayden Learns That Love Is Not Fast Food

Quiet Prayer
Lord Jesus, help us slow down with Your Word. Teach us to choose Your Love over the world’s approval, and give us courage when others mock us for belonging to You. Amen.

Kayden used to think Love meant staying close to people no matter what.

Even if they pulled her toward bad choices.
Even if they laughed at what was holy.
Even if they made her feel small for wanting something different.

Her old group of friends knew how to have fun. At least, that was what they called it.

Parties, secrets. pressure.
Laughing at things that were not funny. Calling sin freedom, and calling conviction boring.

For a while, Kayden almost followed them.

She wanted to belong. She did not want to be left out.
She did not want to be called “too serious,” “too churchy,” or “Miss Perfect.”

But something inside her kept feeling uneasy. It was not shame from God. It was the Holy Spirit warning her.

One morning, Kayden opened her Bible app and saw the verse of the day:

“Above all, Love each other deeply, because Love covers a multitude of sins.”
— 1 Peter 4:8

At first, it sounded simple.

Love each other deeply.

But Kayden had learned that sometimes people use the word Love when they really mean, “Do what we want so we do not have to feel convicted.”

She thought about fast food—something quick, easy, and convenient. A quick bite before school. A quick verse before rushing out the door.

But the Word of God was not fast food.

It was living bread.

Kayden decided to read more of 1 Peter 4. As she read, she saw that Peter was not talking about shallow Love or Love that joins people in sin. He was writing to believers who might suffer for belonging to Christ.

Peter said not to be surprised when fiery trials come. He said if we are insulted because of the Name of Christ, we are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on us.

Kayden sat still. That verse felt personal.

Later that week, her old friends saw her sitting with Matthias, Kazim, Brent, and Azzah near the courtyard.

One of the girls from her old group called out, “So this is what you do now? Bible bench?”

Another laughed. “Kayden thinks she’s holy now.”

Someone else said, “She used to be fun. Now she acts like she’s better than everybody.”

Kayden’s face grew hot. She wanted to answer back; she wanted to defend herself.
She wanted to say something sharp enough to make them stop.

But then she remembered Peter’s words.

“Arm yourself with the same attitude as Christ.”

Kayden looked down at her hands and whispered, “Jesus, help me Love deeply without going back.”

Azzah noticed her expression. “That hurt, didn’t it?”

Kayden nodded. “It makes me feel like I’m doing something wrong just because I don’t want to go with them anymore.”

Brent leaned forward. “You’re not doing something wrong. You’re choosing life.”

Kazim said, “People don’t always understand when you stop running with them.”

Matthias opened his Bible app and read softly:

“They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.”
— 1 Peter 4:4

Kayden looked up. “That’s exactly what it feels like.”

Matthias nodded. “Peter warned us that people may mock us when we no longer live the way we used to.”

Kayden swallowed hard. “But I don’t hate them. I just don’t want to follow that path anymore.”

Azzah smiled gently. “That is Love, too.”

Kayden looked confused. “How?”

“Because real Love does not join people in destruction,” Azzah said. “Real Love prays. Real Love tells the truth. Real Love does not pretend sin is safe.”

Matthias added, “Love covers a multitude of sins, but Love does not call sin harmless.”

Kayden sat quietly as those words settled in her heart.

Love was not pretending everything was okay.
Love was not giving in, so people would like her.
Love was not returning to the old group just because they mocked her.

Love was choosing Jesus.

Love was praying for them without following them.
Love was forgiving their mockery without agreeing with their choices.
Love was staying steady when her old life tried to pull her back.

That afternoon, Kayden walked past her old group again.

One of them rolled her eyes. “There goes Miss Perfect.”

Kayden stopped for a moment.

Her heart hurt.

But instead of answering with anger, she prayed quietly:

“Lord Jesus, let Your Kingdom come. Let Your will be done in me on earth as it is in heaven. Help me, Love them with Your Love, but do not let me go back to what You rescued me from.”

Then she kept walking.

Not because she was better than them.

Because Jesus was better than what had almost trapped her.

When she reached the courtyard, Matthias, Kazim, Brent, and Azzah were waiting for her.

Brent gave her a small smile. “You okay?”

Kayden nodded slowly. “I think so.”

Azzah opened her sketchbook. She had drawn a girl standing on a path. Behind her was a noisy crowd calling her back. Ahead of her was light.

Kayden looked at the drawing and felt tears rise.

“That’s how it feels,” she whispered.

Matthias said, “Choosing Jesus may cost you some friendships. But it will never cost you His Love.”

Kayden took a deep breath.

The sting was still there.

But so was peace.

She remembered that suffering for Christ did not mean God had abandoned her. Sometimes it meant His light in her was disturbing the surrounding darkness.

And if she was insulted because of the Name of Jesus, she was blessed.

Not because mockery felt good.

But because she belonged to Him.

Heart Lesson

God’s Love is not shallow.

Love does not mean joining people in sin so they will accept us.
Love does not mean going back to what Jesus rescued us from.
Love does not mean pretending bad choices are harmless.

God’s Love helps us forgive, pray, and speak truth.

Sometimes people may mock us for choosing Jesus. They may say, “We think we are better than they are.” But choosing Jesus does not mean we are perfect. It means we know we need Him.

If you are insulted because you belong to Christ, do not be ashamed.

You are loved. You are seen. You are held.
You belong to Jesus.

Sacred Pause

Have I ever felt pressured to go back to something God rescued me from?

Do I confuse Love with pleasing people?

How can I Love others deeply without joining them in destructive choices?

Prayer of Repentance

Lord Jesus,

Forgive me for the times I chose approval over obedience. Forgive me for the times I followed others into sin because I wanted to belong.

Forgive me for treating Your Word like a quick bite instead of the living bread my soul needs.

Forgive me for shallow Love, people-pleasing, fear, and compromise. Teach me to Love deeply with Your Love, not my own strength.

Help me forgive those who mock me. Help me pray for those still trapped in destructive choices. But do not let me return to what You rescued me from.

Let Your Kingdom come. Let Your will be done in me on earth as it is in heaven.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

Closing Prayer

Father God,

Bless every young person who is trying to choose Jesus while old friends pull them back. Strengthen them when they are mocked, misunderstood, or called names for walking away from sin.

Teach them that suffering for Christ is not shameful. Remind them that the Spirit of glory and of God rests on those who belong to You.

Give them safe, faithful friends who encourage them toward life. Help them Love deeply, forgive honestly, and stand firmly in truth.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

Memory Verse

“Above all, Love each other deeply, because Love covers a multitude of sins.”
— 1 Peter 4:8

Youth Reminder

Love does not mean going back to what Jesus rescued you from.

Choosing Jesus does not make you “Miss or Mr. Perfect.” It makes you His.

Soli Deo Gloria
