Not a Fast-Food Verse

Quiet Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me slow down with Your Word. Teach me not to take one verse like a quick bite, but to receive the whole meal You have prepared for my soul. Amen.

When I read a “Verse of the Day” in the morning and feel rushed, I often think about fast food.

Something quick.
Something easy.
Something I can pick up on the way.

But the Word of God is not meant to be treated like a quick bite when our souls need nourishment.

Today’s verse was:

“Above all, Love each other deeply, because Love covers over a multitude of sins.”
— 1 Peter 4:8

That seems simple enough, right?

Love each other deeply.

But when we slow down and read the whole chapter, we begin to understand that Peter is not talking about shallow Love, conditional Love, or the kind of Love we define by our own strength.

Without the Love of God, our own weak and conditional understanding of Love will not cover us or those around us. The first bite from someone else, especially someone close to us, can send us down a path that is not good for our hearts or for those around us.

That is why we need God’s perfect Love.

Peter explains that sometimes suffering because we belong to Christ is not a sign that something is wrong. Sometimes it is confirmation that we belong to God through Christ. His light disturbs the darkness; therefore, we can rejoice, not because pain is easy, but because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on those who suffer for the Name of Jesus.

Yesterday, while I was at the airport, a sudden attack came against me.

I knew something was happening.

I sat with it for a moment, trying to discern whether it was the LORD’s intervention or the enemy trying to prevent me from doing the will of the Father.

So I prayed:

“LORD of all creation, Thy Kingdom come. Let Your will be done in me on earth as it is in heaven.”

As quickly as the attack came, it subsided after I prayed.

That reminded me of Peter’s words:

“Therefore, since Christ suffered in His body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude…”
— 1 Peter 4:1

Notice that Peter says to arm ourselves with the same attitude.

He is not telling us to seek suffering, harm ourselves, or afflict ourselves to prove our faith. That is not the heart of Christ.

But he is teaching us to prepare our hearts.

If we suffer because we belong to Jesus, we should not be surprised. If we are insulted because of His Name, we are blessed. The world may not understand why we no longer run toward the same destructive patterns we once followed. Some may mock, slander, or accuse us because we no longer join them in what once held us captive.

Peter warns about this.

He reminds us that we once lived according to the desires of the world, but now we are called to live for the will of God.

I know this warning personally.

I have lived in ways that grieved the LORD. I have chased what could not satisfy. I have tasted the suffering that comes from sin, and it is far heavier than the enemy ever allows us to see at first.

Sin always promises freedom, but it leads to bondage.

But Jesus came to set captives free.

So when Peter says to Love deeply, he is not giving us a soft little saying to grab on the way out the door. He is calling us into a life shaped by Christ.

A life that suffers without returning evil for evil,  loves when mocked, and repents quickly.
A life that refuses to return to old bondage, but instead, trusts God’s will more than the world’s approval.

Love covers a multitude of sins because God’s Love is holy, patient, truthful, forgiving, and redemptive.

It is not shallow or careless. It is not a compromise. It is not pretending that sin does not matter.

It is the Love of Christ at work in us.

The kind of Love that keeps praying and keeps forgiving. Why, because forgiveness keeps us from falling back into the old patterns of self-vindication.
We pray for the kind of Love that keeps warning. The kind of Love that keeps walking in truth.

So Today, I do not want to treat God’s Word like fast food. Jesus is preparing breakfast for you. But you will miss the fullness of His Perfect Love.

I want the whole meal. I want the nourishment of truth.
I want the correction of the Spirit. I want the Love that covers.
I want the faith that endures suffering. I want the wisdom to discern attacks.
I want the humility to repent quickly.

Above all, may I Love deeply—not by my own strength, but by the perfect Love of God through Jesus Christ.

Sacred Pause

Have I treated God’s Word like a quick bite instead of allowing it to nourish and correct me?

Where do I need God’s Love to cover what my own Love cannot?

Am I prepared to suffer for Christ without returning to old patterns?

Prayer of Repentance

Father God,

Forgive me for the times I rushed through Your Word and only took what felt quick, easy, or comforting.

Forgive me for trying to Love in my own strength. Forgive me for conditional Love, shallow Love, impatient Love, and Love that gives up when it is wounded.

Forgive me for the times I returned to old patterns instead of arming myself with the attitude of Christ. Forgive me for the sins I once entertained, excused, or followed.

Cleanse me, LORD. Teach me to Love deeply with Your Love. Teach me to discern what is from You and what is an attack from the enemy. Teach me to rejoice when I suffer for the Name of Jesus, knowing that the Spirit of glory and of God rests on those who belong to You.

Let Your Kingdom come. Let Your will be done in me on earth as it is in heaven.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus,

Nourish me with the fullness of Your Word. Do not let me live on spiritual fast food when You have prepared truth, wisdom, correction, and Love for my soul.

Help me Love deeply. Help me endure faithfully. Help me repent quickly. Help me walk away from worldly desires and live for God’s will.

When darkness is disturbed by Your light in me, keep me steady. When I am mocked, insulted, or misunderstood because of Your Name, remind me that I belong to You.

Let Your perfect Love cover, heal, correct, and redeem.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

Soli Deo Gloria
