The Little Things That Matter
Day’s Journey Youth Reflection
Scripture Anchor:
“Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.”
— Daniel 12:3
Matthias sat outside near the school courtyard after youth group, his Bible resting open on his lap.
The evening air was cool, and the sky was beginning to darken. A few stars had started to appear, soft and bright above the rooftops.
He had been reading Daniel 12:3:
“Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.”
For some reason, the verse made him think about his dad.
Not just the big memories.
Not just birthdays.
Not just holidays.
Not just the moments other people would understand.
But the little things.
His dad remembered the little things that mattered to him.
He remembered the snacks Matthias liked after practice.
He remembered when Matthias needed quiet instead of questions.
He remembered the songs Matthias played over and over.
He remembered when Matthias was trying to be brave but was really hurting.
He remembered the things that made Matthias laugh.
He remembered the things Matthias could not stand.
And that remembering made Matthias feel loved.
It said, “I see you.”
It said, “You matter.”
It said, “What matters to you matters to me.”
Matthias looked down at his Bible and swallowed hard.
Grief could still show up in small places.
A song.
A smell.
A certain kind of snack.
A quiet evening.
A verse about shining like stars.
Sometimes people thought grief was only about the person being gone. But Matthias knew grief was also about the Love that remained. It was about all the little memories that still carried a person’s voice, kindness, and care.

Kazim walked over from the basketball court, spinning the ball slowly in his hands.
“You okay?” he asked.
Matthias nodded at first, then shrugged.
“I was thinking about my dad.”
Kazim sat beside him without joking.
“What about him?”

Matthias looked up at the sky.
“He remembered stuff,” Matthias said. “Little stuff. Stuff other people might not notice.”
Kazim listened.
“He knew what mattered to me,” Matthias continued. “And he knew what I hated too—not like people, but things that felt wrong. Like being lied to. Being manipulated. Being treated like the truth didn’t matter.”
Kazim nodded slowly. “That kind of stuff matters.”
“Yeah,” Matthias said. “And when someone remembers those things about you, it feels like Love.”
Azzah and Kayden came over quietly and sat nearby. Brent leaned against the wall, listening with his arms folded gently.
Azzah held her notebook against her chest.
“My grandmother used to remember little things,” she said softly. “She said Love pays attention.”
Kayden nodded. “That’s true. Sometimes the little things are not little to the person receiving them.”
Brent looked thoughtful. “It’s like Jesus asking Peter, ‘Do you Love Me?’ He didn’t just ask for words. He told him to feed His sheep.”

Matthias looked at Brent.
Brent continued, “Love remembers what matters to Jesus too.”
The group grew quiet.
Matthias turned back to the open Bible.
He thought about Peter.
Jesus asked him three times, “Do you Love Me?”
Peter was grieved by the third time and said, “Lord, You know all things. You know that I Love You.”
Then Jesus told him to feed His sheep.

Matthias understood that a little differently now.
Love was not just saying, “I Love You, Jesus.”
Love was caring about what Jesus cares about.
The lost.
The hurting.
The confused.
The bullied.
The lonely.
The ones who needed truth.
The ones who needed kindness.
The ones who needed someone to remember that they mattered.
Daniel said the wise would shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever.
Maybe that shining did not always look loud.
Maybe it looked like remembering the quiet kid’s name.
Maybe it looked like noticing when someone was not okay.
Maybe it looked like telling the truth when others wanted to manipulate.
Maybe it looked like refusing deception.
Maybe it looked like feeding Christ’s sheep one act of Love at a time.
Matthias closed his Bible gently.
“I think I want to remember people better,” he said.
Kayden smiled. “That sounds like Love.”
Azzah nodded. “And wisdom.”
Kazim bounced the ball once. “And maybe righteousness looks like paying attention before people have to ask.”
Brent grinned. “Kazim with another wise quote.”
Kazim pointed at him. “Write it down.”
Everyone laughed softly.
Matthias smiled too, but his eyes were still tender.
He missed his dad.
He always would.

But tonight, the grief did not feel empty. It felt like a reminder.
A reminder that Love pays attention.
A reminder that truth matters.
A reminder that manipulation and deception do not belong in the heart.
A reminder that Jesus knows all things.
Matthias looked up at the stars again.
“Lord,” he whispered, “You know all things. You know that I Love You. Help me feed Your sheep.”
And above them, the stars kept shining.
Quiet.
Faithful.
Bright.
Just like wisdom.
Youth Reflection
Love pays attention.
When we remember the little things that matter to someone, we show them they are seen. Sometimes the little things are not little at all. They may be the very things that help someone feel loved, safe, and remembered.
Matthias remembered how his father paid attention to what mattered to him. That memory helped him understand something deeper about Jesus.
Jesus asked Peter, “Do you Love Me?” Then He told Peter to feed His sheep. That means Love for Jesus becomes care for people.
If we Love Jesus, we care about what matters to Him.
We care about truth.
We care about righteousness.
We care about the hurting.
We care about the lost.
We care about the lonely.
We care about people who need kindness.
Daniel 12:3 says those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars. That shining may begin with simple faithfulness: remembering, noticing, loving, speaking truth, and helping others walk closer to Jesus.
Think About It
Who has remembered the little things that matter to you?
Who is someone you can notice, encourage, or care for this week?
What matters to Jesus that He may be asking you to care about?
Prayer of Repentance, Wisdom, and Love
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for knowing me completely. Thank You for seeing the little things that matter to my heart.
Forgive me for the times I have been too distracted to notice others. Forgive me for forgetting the small things that matter to the people around me. Forgive me for caring more about myself than about the sheep You have called me to Love.
Give me discernment to recognize manipulation, deception, and anything that pulls people away from truth. Help me reject what is evil and hold fast to what is good.
Lord, You know all things. You know that I Love You.
Teach me to Love You with more than words. Help me feed Your sheep. Help me care for the hurting, include the lonely, encourage the weak, and lead others toward righteousness.
Make my life shine with Your wisdom, not for my glory, but for Yours.
Let my heart Love You, Lord, for the sake of the salvation of many.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
