Day’s Journey—Today
Lord, Help Me Persevere
By Lisa Rene Delgado

“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial.” —James 1:12

Opening Prayer

Lord, open my heart to Your Word, and don’t let shame drown out Your invitation. Help me be a doer of Your Word and receive Your correction, trust Your mercy, and depend on Your Spirit for Today. But Today, I see Victory because the Holy Spirit is leading, and I place my trust in Jesus Christ, Your Son. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When I read about persevering under trial, my mind sometimes goes straight to the many times I have failed.

I remember words I should have held back, moments when frustration governed my response, and choices I wish I could undo. Before I finish reading the promise, I am already reviewing my failures.

But Today, I pause.

The Word that reveals my need also directs me toward the One who helps me. James tells us to ask God for wisdom, and he describes God as generous in giving it (James 1:5). I can come to Him in my weakness and ask.

Lord, I cannot walk faithfully through this day without You.

Jesus teaches us to remain in Him because, apart from Him, we can do nothing (John 15:5). Perseverance grows through that dependence: listening, obeying, receiving correction, and returning when we stumble.

James also asks us to recognize how sin develops. Desire entices us; when we yield to it, sin takes root, and its course leads toward death (James 1:14–15).

That warning makes me consider what I allow to grow within me.

An offense can become resentment. Resentment can shape my thoughts until a sharp answer feels justified. Then words leave my mouth, and I cannot take them back.

Relationships can suffer. Trust can fracture. Something precious can be wounded in a moment. These losses don’t exhaust the meaning of James’s warning about death, but they remind me that sin has consequences.

So I want to bring my heart before the Lord while the words are still forming.

Lord, please keep a tight rein on my tongue.

James returns to this very concern when he speaks about keeping our tongues under control (James 1:26). My words matter to God because the people who receive them matter to Him.

Sometimes I need to speak truth, set a boundary, or address a wrong. I need His wisdom for those moments too. I can ask Him to help me speak clearly, with Love and self-control.

The Holy Spirit grows that fruit within us (Galatians 5:22–23). As I yield to Him, I can learn to pause before answering, listen more carefully, and choose words that serve what is good.

And when I fail, I can confess my sin, receive God’s forgiveness, and take the next faithful step (1 John 1:9). Where repair is possible, I can apologize and accept responsibility.

Today, perseverance may look like a quiet prayer in the middle of a difficult conversation:

Fill my heart with Your peace, Love, mercy, and forgiveness. Renew my mind with Your truth. Help me respond under Your care.

Sacred Pause

Before you respond, take a breath.

What is stirring beneath your words—hurt, fear, anger, or a desire to be understood?

Bring it honestly before the Lord.

“Set a guard over my mouth, LORD.” —Psalm 141:3

Prayer of Repentance and Perseverance

Father, forgive me for times I have let resentment, pride, or anger govern my words. Show me where I need to take responsibility and make amends. Help me receive Your correction with a willing heart.

Keep a tight rein on my tongue. Fill my heart with Your peace, Love, mercy, and forgiveness. Renew my thoughts through Your Word. By Your Holy Spirit, teach me patience and self-control.

When I am tempted, help me turn to You. When I stumble, help me return. Strengthen me to persevere in loving You Today.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

Soli Deo Gloria.
