Learning How to Walk, Not Perform
A Day’s Journey through 1 Thessalonians 4:1–2
Soli Deo Gloria
“Finally then, brethren, we urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus,
that you should abound more and more,
just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God.”
— 1 Thessalonians 4:1
Introduction: A New Kind of Forward
Paul does not begin with a rebuke.
He begins with a relationship.
“Brethren.”
Family.
Belonging.
After repentance, after correction, after tearing down altars, God does not leave us standing still. He teaches us how to walk forward—not in fear, not in pressure, but in love.
This is not about becoming someone new overnight.
This is about learning how to walk daily with God.
Morning Devotional
“Abound More and More”
Paul assumes something important:
You are already walking.
He does not say, start from nothing.
He says, continue—grow—abound more and more.
God is not asking for instant perfection.
He is inviting progress shaped by obedience.
To “abound” means to increase steadily, quietly, and faithfully. This is how God works—line upon line, step upon step.
Walking with God is not dramatic.
It is deliberate.
Sacred Pause
Sit quietly with the Lord.
- Where have I been faithful, even in small ways?
- Where is God inviting me to grow “a little more”?
Noon Reflection
Obedience Rooted in Relationship
“…just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God.”
Paul reminds them: ” You already received instruction.
Truth had been planted.
Now it must be lived.
Obedience is not a burden when it flows from love. It becomes heavy only when we forget who we are walking with.
We do not obey to earn God’s favor.
We obey because we already have it.
Prayer of Alignment
Faithful God,
Thank you for being so patient with me as I learn how to walk with You. Forgive me for every time I turned obedience into pressure or fear. Teach me how to please You—not through performance, but through daily faithfulness. Strengthen my steps today.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Evening Devotional
Commandments Given in Love
“For you know what commandments we gave you through the Lord Jesus.”
— 1 Thessalonians 4:2
Paul is clear: these are not human opinions.
They come through the Lord Jesus.
Jesus’ commands are not harsh.
They are protective.
When God sets boundaries, He is not limiting life—He is guarding it. Walking within His will keeps our hearts tender, our prayers unhindered, and our peace intact.
Tonight, we rest knowing that God’s instruction flows from His love.
Sacred Pause
As the day closes:
- What step of obedience did I take today, even quietly?
- Where did I feel God’s gentleness instead of pressure?
Evening Prayer of Trust & Rest
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for walking with me. Thank You for Your commands that lead to life. As I rest tonight, quiet every anxious thought and strengthen my resolve to walk with You tomorrow. I trust You to lead me—step by step.
Amen.
Closing Doxology
Praise and glory to God Almighty,
the True and Living God.
He teaches His children how to walk.
He leads us gently in truth.
Soli Deo Gloria.
